I guess today is a day of denials and when Facebook speaks back /takes action. The week has been pretty hectic in a bad way for the social network, starting off with a racist activity on a fan page of Julius Malema demanding the killing of whites. While that wasn’t enough a report came forward stating that Facebook is responsible in the growing cases of Syphilis.
The fan page was banned and stripped off by the social network police and as for the other allegation, the social network has put that down too. The network stated the allegations to be very senseless, shocking and the rest can be filled up by our dear readers. To be hones, I found that ridiculing as well but given how vital these social networks are now in our lives, I had to make myself believe that. If that is really true I guess the thoughts of any individual are the cause of all evil and STDs in the world. Wont you agree? That is exactly where and how all evil germinates and in order to reduce such risks it is the thought of each individual that has to be taken care of, not the mediums through which these become a reality.
The wrath ends at Facebook as the social network has finally pulled down the shutters on ANCYL page that sparked controversy with hate comments. The fire was ignited by a fan of the group, Thato Mbateti Mbateti who said that all white people should be killed. Obviously that profile is not of a real person, think of it, who in his right senses would post such hateful sentences from a real profile? I am not sure if he would actually succeed in harming person, but would definitely have himself behind bars.
The purpose of the group/fan page was of course to defame Julius Malema who yesterday declined any connection to the page. That was perhaps the right move instead of jumping in to wade off these allegations and remarks. However the Democratic Alliance is not giving up on this issue that easily and is filing a complaint to Police in South Africa. The initial page has long disappeared from Facebook, however there is a new one now which according to its members is being monitored to avoid any similar incident taking place. Guess they did pay heed to the suggestion made yesterday.
Facebook is showing the world that it really cares about happiness. The social network is set to release it application that indexes happiness of its users across Canada, Australia and UK. It was initially meant to be released in the US alone. Glad they changed that bit and realized that happiness is not just meant to be indexed in one region.
The app simply keeps a check on your status updates. The idea is to figure out on what days are the users most happy and days of the year when they are emotionally low. Of course this wont provide you the exact figures but it is interesting, given it can very well help you figure what actually are the days when they are the most happy. I can bet the those days include holidays, major events like Christmas, New year Eve, Easter, etc. The stats [which you can view here] provide a much detailed analysis on how the graph is plotted, primarily in terms of Happiness, days when the emotional status updates were zero and days with positive and negative emotions.
Looks like Facebook is being sniffed by privacy experts in Germany and Switzerland. The allegation is that the social network lets people upload photos and videos of others on the site without their permission. Very rightly said, I mean how many times have you actually asked your friends before actually uploading their pictures? I bet no one ever does, primarily because we think it doesn’t really matter since they are friends.
I am sure it doesn’t really matter much if the others are also a part of the social network but what about those who aren’t? Should we actually overlook this matter and continue sharing important things, to be exact very private information like photos, etc on our albums. The data protection companies are also requesting the social network to share certain details and practices upon which users actually share online. At present the social network simply believes you when you upload or share information about anyone by placing the check box that says you comply that the image uploaded is your own. So is this really enough? I don’t think so.
Am I attracting too much negativity towards myself that I more often come across bad news? The latest report is of the growing cases of Syphilis and the reason put forward by the medical experts is the highly influential Social networking site Facebook. The number of cases have gone up from less than a dozen in 2008 to over 30 last year. I find it pretty believable, given there are so many cases where women fall prey to sex offenders. That is just one of the many reasons. The other is how people on the social networking site try to hook up with the opposite sex for causal sex.
Not all are of course because of this, but social networking sites are one reason for this. According to the same report, one in every four cases suffers from this owing to social networks, where they are constantly in search of being intimate with the opposite gender. To make the situation worse their activities are unprotected. The numbers provided are for Durham, Teesside and Sunderland and if it is really so widespread already, I bet the same would grow further in other regions.
Looks like the reports and the issues that the hate group gave air to has got attention of Julius Malema. We reported yesterday that ANC Youth League fan page on Facebook asked the people to rape and kill white people. Malema has come back stating that he has never propagated such a thing.
The issue set afire the entire fan page when a member, Thato Mbateti put in his two cents with a hateful racist comment. This was just one of the many that later followed and the same news filled the social sector of the Web. The president of ANCYL denied any connection stating that he has no page on the social network and would therefore will not be commenting on the same. South Africa has been marked by racist hatred, primarily the conflicts between the white and the colored. This is a gnawing issue in real and when certain things happen the situation very easily gets out of hands.
You really have to be more than just smart to figure out the bad guy on the Web. Especially on your darling social network. I might sound rude here and my apology for that, but the sort of stories that have been read and put up on the Web it just seems trusting folks online is a default act of many. Call them innocent or the players being very clever with their task. Many innocent folks fall prey to these. To prove that point another woman has reported that she was raped by her Facebook date.
The man accused is Ronald Rhodes, a 22 year old guy who influenced an 18 year old woman to go on a date with him and then raped her, recording the whole thing and blackmailing her to do the same again if she needed to live along with cash. The man is in jail, fined with $500,000, forced rape, kidnapping, being a few charges put against him. The punishment he deserves should be much more severe, given that he is already an enlisted sex offender.
Green Peace, Global Relief Fund for Haiti Victims, etc, are just the good side of people/organizations using Facebook for the good cause(s). There are some who use to axe their own growth or end up doing that (Nestle) and then there are some extremists. Consider this latest news, where a guy is reportedly propagating the raping and killing of white people. And he is apparently supporting Julius Malema. Wow.
Of course there are inquiries been made regarding this and I myself performed a search for ANC Youth League President Julius Malema. I couldn’t find the exact words that talked about killing people but the wall posts did point out the hostile behavior of the youth league regarding this:
The major issue with Facebook Chat is that you can only have conversations one on one. I miss out having the ability to group chat with my peers, especially when there is an important matter that needs to be discussed and having a separate client appears hectic. I guess that issue will be resolved to a certain extent thanks to Donut Chat’s application for Facebook that enables you to chat with your entire team. How?
Donut Chat works quite simply like any other chat service. You can either have a dedicated page at Donut Chat or to make it more convenient embed the same on your web page. Users, other than the administrator can log in with any of their social networking IDs to be a part of it. To begin with you will have to register yourself for a Donut Chat account and simply head over to the application link [here] . With that done you can add the application to any Facebook Page and the basic feature would provide you to enable 10 people chat simultaneously as well as share files around 10MB in size. Which sounds good enough for free. This is of course best for a very small organization where there isn’t a big need to have a room crowded by participants.
