I agree with Lucy, if you need to pay for a service, then the community will shrink somehow and those who stay in there tend to believe only what they say in the community. As much as I am attached to Twitter, I wouldn't be willing to pay for it either. If it was to become a fee-based service, the user pool would consist only of those (mostly annoying) entities that use it for an advertising/marketing tool and it would lose its "social" aspect, and thus its appeal, altogether.
