Amazon has recently acquired Shelfari, a premier social network for book lovers for an undisclosed amount. Shelfari is yet another addition in the long list of Amazon’s acquisition. It has been uphold by the Internet tycoon for the long time and had raised good amount of funding from it.
Last year, Shelfari had been regarded as a Spammer by Library Thing, its true competitor. While Amazon has already acquired AbeBooks, the market place for rare digital book, few weeks ago that already had a 40% stake in the LibraryThing. Thus, Abe Books acquisition had already granted LibraryThing’s share to Amazon.
LibraryThing and Shelfari are true competitors and Amazon could have easily merge these two entities to make most out of these acquisitions. But LibraryThing’s criticism for Shelfari by considering it as a bad marketing policy maker and an Astroturf that spam blogs depicts that it is impossible to do so.
Apart from all this crap, Shelfari is really excited about its acquisition and has considered it as a bright step that will foster the ever growing needs of a mass sector.
We’ve got some big plans ahead. With more resources and Amazon’s expertise in building a platform where people come to share ideas, there are a lot of new opportunities in the future that will benefit each of you. In the meantime, you’ll continue to have access to the great community and tools that you’ve always known and used on the site.
Shelfari has also added that it would join amaranthine race of serving great communities with Amazon to make its service more exciting.
We look forward to working with Amazon to continue with our mission of building great communities that celebrate books. As I said earlier, this is a very exciting day for the entire Shelfari team and community, and we are thrilled to join the Amazon family.
