Free open source web meeting company, Dimdim, has raised $6 million in the B round of funding. The company works on the same notion as that of WebEx but the only difference is that the service is free. The company provides all the necessary tools one could expect in a web meeting service like collaborative whiteboard, desktop sharing, audio and video. Although these options are available and prove healthy, they still need to address some technical issues.
According to Dimdim’s Chief Executive, Ganguly, the service has been utilised by over 180 companies and more than 500,000 people have used it since its release in private testing mode back in 2007. Ganguly further says that the service democratises the web meetings.
The round was participated by the current investors which includes Index Ventures, Nexus India Capital and Draper Richards. Last year, the Boston based company raised $2.4 million in their Series A of funding. According to Ganguly, most of the raised money will be spent on marketing.
One of the company’s next shift would be taking its technology to various other markets. To do so, they will be starting with video this year. The company also has several plans to generate revenue which include a premium service and ads in the free version.
