And the race of the URL shorteners continues, each trying to beat the other by differing in names and a few additional features like password protection, etc. I just came across another one (don’t blame me, it’s the fault of the real time FriendFeed), 3.ly. The new URL shortener takes the cake away as being the shortest URL creator with a mere 14 characters, beating is.gd’s 17. Now this might sound pretty useless to talk about and many would jump out shouting if there isn’t anything better to talk about. I personally think it’s useful, all those useful URL shorteners, especially in the age of micro-messaging services (I didn’t say Twitter) where you would love to save as many of those 140 characters by shrinking the long URLs, there is quite a need for these services. 14 characters, I can bet there is some geek already at work to shrink it further by a couple of more. Anyone?

I googled 3.ly to see what other people had to say about it. My contention is that 3.ly is great, but just doesn’t look like a url.

Thanks Steve for the link back, we really appreciate it. Plus I agree that it doesn’t really appear to be a URL, but it lives up to its purpose, creating short(est) URL.

Threely is an AMAZING shortener! I use it all the time for my tweets… Hey Steve, you say you googled and came accross that article but what’s funny is that the author’s name of that article is STEVE. If you are the same person it sounds like you work for TinyURL or Bitly. The also goes on about .ly domains when the current most popular shortener is a .ly domain. Additionally, it is the only ‘article’ on that site… very unusual but none of my biz…. 3.ly is the shortest possible shortener, it’s the one I now prefer. I think the fact that it looks ‘unusual’ with the digit 3 there makes it even more unique than what it already is
My 2 cents…

Steve, I think mis-read your message, I thought you were pointing out that article as if you found it on google. I still think threely is currently the best shortener…

WOW! Great story on 3.ly! I am now switching over to using Threely for all my URL shortening! Every letter counts, and 3.ly is the shortest. Threely should be the world’s ‘default’ shortener! Not only is it short, but the name sounds cool and makes sense: 3 Letter URL Shortener!

Cool… Yea, I actually use 3.ly all the time. In particular I like like ability to put a dash (-) after your short urls since it brings you to the stats page.
