image thumb38 BlackBerry renames app store to Application Center: I am tired of my stiff appearance!

I guess BlackBerry is trying to shed off its aging and ah, I am so mature persona to become more hippy, as it changed the name of its Application Center to BlackBerry App World. This had been in plan since October last year. I am not sure why was their a need to do this? First they removed the keyboard from their device, which was something I so loved about it and now the name, of course there is nothing wrong about it. But…. BlackBerry App World? It’s like seeing a grandpa hopping around with a candy in his mouth and shouting I am a kid.

Online learning startup, Myngle has pocketed $1.25 million as a bank loan from Rabobank. The service had been founded by former eBay employees. Myngle provides a marketplace for languages, giving students and teachers a chance to collaborate with each other and find courses that match each others interest.

image thumb37 Conveneer bags $4.5 million to put phones on the Web with Mikz

Conveneer, a mobile startup closed its venture round with a healthy $4.5 million. The round was led by Industrifonden along with participation from Arrow Venture Capitals. Conveneer is set to create Mikz, a platform for mobiles that gives your cell phone a URL. This would make your device accessible on the web as well, it’s like a portal that lets you share data between the phone and web. So what carriers and devices is it going to come out with, we will have to wait for a year until it launches and I bet it’s going to cost a few extra bucks.

image thumb36 BackURL: Back up your URL for times when it goes down

You can easily share your content with a shortened URL and it sounds great, but what if you are about to show your page to show your work and the server is down? Don’t you wish you had a backup, just for a demo? Well then BackupURL, no I haven’t eaten words spaces but that’s what the startup is about. It instantly creates a cached copy of your page and backs it up just in case you are caught in one of those unlucky days as I previously mentioned. Just hit the link and you can demonstrate the page as it was when you last backed it up. Using the service is as free as air, all you have to do is paste your URL and hit backup to get its URL. Easy and worth the time you will put backing your page up, the only issue what if both yours and BackURL’s servers go down simultaneously? Make a run for it. You can view our cached page here.

image thumb29 HTC Magic/G2: Vodafone to ship devices in April

HTC Magic, G2 is coming out in April as the website confirms. As I had said earlier, the device looks way better than its ancestor, the G1 and has the charm with its less bulky appearance. Although I am quite surprised why they would chose white for the device (any clues). It consists of the following features:

image thumb28 Alert: Facebook to make Home Pages real time

Facebook is coming out with another update and this time it’s going to be real time news feeds. This would replace the existing system that refreshes every ten minutes or so. Apart from that users will also have better filtering options along with Facebook pages that will now appear more like the profiles as Adam Ostrow reports. We are waiting for the changes to take effect, where as the full migration will begin from next week.

image thumb27 Sony Pictures to wave goodbye to 300 employees

Sony Pictures suffers from the recession as the studio waved goodbye to 300 of its employees. The reason being the low sales and it appears that the studio’s efforts to reduce costs by cutting short travel and entertainment expenses proved futile. This follows layoffs from Warner Brothers earlier, but Sony has its own problems flooding in from studios to even the much anticipated PS3 that fails to make profits for the corporation.
