image thumb7 BurnURL: a URL shortener from ReadBurner

When I will say that ReadBurner has introduced a new service called BurnURL that shorten URLs, you might think that there is already a plethora of such services already. But it’s just a tick different. Of course it makes sharing content, favorite pages across IMs, Twitter, etc easier but it gives another advantage, a share bar that includes links to share various social networks like Facebook, Digg, etc. It shows the number of times the page has been visited and how much it has been liked. I liked this new service.

While Sony’s PS3 appears to be losing grounds Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii, the team is pretty confident that the console would stand tall in the long run. It believes it has a life cycle of a decade, much longer than its competitors. Might sound more of a fantasy, but I remember PS2 and the period for which it reined the gaming market. Perhaps the advantage the PS2 had to its descendant was the price, the only major problem PS3 has is that it sells for almost twice the price for what its competitors sell their device for added with the cost of each game you buy on the Blu-ray. Sony has tried to cut the price but isn’t enough to allure the masses. Presently the management is looking forward to release games that invite attention from die hard gamers and looks forward to its Killzone 2; which already has a rating of 91 out of 100 even though its priced at $60. That bundled with the upcoming games may just push the number of PS3 lovers in the market.

image thumb4 Fujitsu Siemens to bring a PC thats Natures best friend

The only way you can save energy consumed by your computer is to pull the plug out. Yes, the PC consumes around 4 watts of energy even when the devices is turned off and this is used to keep the device wired for remote power-on. Means the only way to save energy is to pull the plug out. Fujitsu Siemens Computers is working to release a Green PC that consumes no energy without having the plug pulled out. It will work by letting machines have a pre-defined time slots during which they can perform updates and once that is done, the machine automatically turns to power freeze, meaning no energy is consumed until the user switches on the power. Apart from that the power supply has an efficiency of 89%, making sure that least power is lost. The price for this machine will be in the range of €600 to €700.

image thumb3 Google releases standalone installer for Chrome

Google has launched a separate, standalone installer for Chrome users. The new installer won’t auto-update, meaning all the future releases of the browser will be missed out and those include security features as well. Though users can manually download the installer from the site. This can be useful if you need to carry to the setup file with you, incase you bump into a cousin’s machine that has no Chrome installed, otherwise it’s pretty unwanted.

image thumb1 Mendeley: Doing for academics what Last.fm does for music

While there are a countless places to share your thoughts, opinions, etc with people around the globe and many others dedicated to the cause of helping academics, Mendeley is one of them. It’s a software that helps one manage and share research papers apart from searching and connecting with those related to the academics. I personally like the idea of providing a dedicated platform/service for those in academics easing the task of sharing and collaborating with fellow. It has been busy with updates and recently launched support for translations and raising a healthy $2 million recently. In time Mendeley might just live up to its dream of becoming the Last.fm for academics. You can tour the site here to learn more.

image thumb stHrt: Start Homepage for your favorite pages on the web

If you are tired of using the traditional start pages of iGoogle, Yahoo homepage, etc and feel like having the same thing with a new name, try stHrt [pron. start [stahrt]. The site lets you put up all your frequently pages on a single one, providing you a one stop access to them all. Works pretty much like the countless we have already but as I always point out there are too many people on the web who won’t mind getting their hands on another. stHrt is another one in the race with tough challenge to gain a place in the market and it’s going to take time. The interface is pretty simple and  it lets users have multiple homepages for work and home, plus it lets you make the page more interactive with widgets. What I personally liked using it was the feature of layered browsing, made it easier to check out my favorite pages without leaving my homepage.
