Google ranks top ‘Torrent sites’

Google site ranking

With a large number of torrent sites around, it is hard to select the most popular one but with the passage of time, new ways are coming up to gauge the ranking. Alexa, being one of the most popular ranking site, is coded usually in reports but now Google is providing its own ranking along with the traffic estimation.

Once logged on to the account, Google’s site comparison contains an interesting feature according to which it provides an estimate of daily traffic. Google analytics, consumer panels and other third party market research are the places from where the site caters traffic.

For some sites, the data of the traffic looks to be accurate. e.g. everyday unique visitors of Mininova are just above 2 million per day which is exactly same as that of Mininova’s official stats.

The graph depicts that Mininova is leading in terms of users followed by The Pirate Bay. isoHunt and Torrentz are competing for the third place. There is an immense gap after the current sites. A lot of resemblance can be found between Google and Alexa stats.

Alexa rankings

An interesting fact about these rankings is that the level of popularity is different in different regions. e.g. Pirate Bay is more popular in the U.S. and Sweden than Mininova. Torrents seems to be very popular in India whereas isoHunt is widely liked in Japan.

BitTorrent sites are growing gradually, specifically The Pirate Bay which has almost doubled its traffic in a year. This is linked with the expansion of the number of peers on the tracker of The Pirate Bay, that went from 5 million to 10 million in the past year.
