HP (Hewlett Packard) has announced today that it is contributing its Tru64 UNIX Advanced File System (AdvFS) source code to the open source community (under the open source General Public License, version 2) in its continuing efforts to advance customer adoption of LINUX.
The code is compatible with LINUX kernel as it is under version 2 of the General Public License. The AdvFS source code has the capability to increase uptime, improve security and help make sure maximum performance of LINUX file system.
AdvFS is a file system which was developed by HP and has been deployed by enterprises around the world for more than 16 years. On AdvFS file system, HP site reads:
It simplifies file and storage management, enables online system backups and increases data availability. The integration of key AdvFS file system features also accelerates the roadmap of future solutions designed to strengthen Linux for enterprise customers.
Doug Small, director of global alliance marketing for HP, said:
A lot of work is going on to bring the Linux operating system to the next level
Small also said that HP has played its part for the LINUX community.
According to HP’s senior vice president and general manager of business critical systems, Martin Finks:
To ensure the highest levels of data security and availability, Linux customers need full and immediate access to established technology.
We continue to invest our engineering resources in the development of that technology while working with the open source community to ensure accessibility and seamless integration.
Executive director of Linux Foundation, Jim Zemlin, said:
HP’s contribution of the Advanced File System code, coupled with its overall resource commitment to Linux, will greatly accelerate the development and commercial availability of improved system functionality for Linux.
The technology and engineering resources being made available for next-generation file system projects are proof that HP is a true open source community leader.
The Linux kernel development community is concentrating on the advancement of file system functionality as it is becoming a business requirement. Right now the file systems are being developed by an open community process.
According to HP’s chief technologist for open source and Linux, Bdale Garbee:
The existing file system matches many of the workloads used in enterprise today. But many more workloads are more demanding and need a more advanced open source file system associated with Linux.
We hope that this will bring overall functionality for desktop users as well. Our target is the enterprise user at this point
