Free music is one of the most attractive phrases on the Internet. Grooveshark not just offers this but it does so in great style. This is one of the coolest Web 2.0 website offering free music I’ve seen to date, and it matches what last.fm has to offer. According to their website:
Grooveshark was founded in 2006 by three University of Florida students determined to accomplish what the music industry couldn’t - make purchasing music online easy, enjoyable and worthwhile.
Grooveshark is the ability to find and listen to any song, share and receive personalized recommendations and purchase music at a fair price with the knowledge that the copyright holder will be paid.
Today, Grooveshark has grown to a team of 40 passionate employees dedicated to creating the best online music experience possible - a goal that doesn’t end, but instead will allow us to grow and evolve with our users.
Although music can be bought from them, Grooveshark lets you listen to any song - even if you don’t own the track - in it’s entirety. This is something that last.fm doesn’t offer with it’s 30 second previews of most tracks. You can also get paid by sharing music. Not that you’ll be doing anything illegal but it means everyone will be able to listen to those songs and by doing this you’ll earn free credit so you can buy more songs. And as with all Web 2.0 websites, the social phenomena kicks in here as well and you can Discover, recommend, share, and download music without restrictions.
Personally, I love this start up. It has one of the most clean and simple interface that just works (Although some parts of it look a bit like iPhone’s interface, but I’m not complaining) It surely gives you a library feeling and it offers a 772 kb plugin Sharkbyte for download which synchs your entire music library to your Grooveshark account. So your music will be online where ever you go. You can organize your playlists, rearrange them and you can do just about anything you’ll want to do with your desktop media player.
The interface looks as something that might be out of Apple’s design ideas, it doesn’t matter much as everyone loves the iPhone’s interface. And I love Grooveshark Lite:
It’s a web app build in Adobe Flex that takes all the best music from Grooveshark and serves it up with a cool, clean interface. Finding what you want is a snap, and with a full fleet of songs, we’ve got most things covered.
So with a killer interface like this and with so much options and features, this service is bound to go places. I have yet to find something I dislike about Grooveshark, I’m that impressed! So, I’ll recommend it to everyone who loves music over every other services out there like last.fm. Grooveshark is here to stay and rock your world! We’ll be keeping an eye on Grooveshark for sure, here at Startup Meme.
