Salesforce that recently acquired Koral Technologies to launch Content Exchange, is now up to something even bigger than acquisitions. They are now offering startups something more than restricted access to APIs or developer conferences, by setting up an incubator.
Software Incubators gained a bad name for themselves when most of the incubators went down with the dot com bust. However the Salesforce model will be different from traditional incubators. Salesforce will be offering office space to startups at a reduced rate of $20,000 per annum. Startups in return will have to concentrate their creative acts around building on-demand business services that complements Salesforce’s CRM offering. Salesforce will also hold biweekly colloquia on product management, on-demand technology and other related issues. Startups will also be able to have “over the coffee machine” discussions with other startups, and will definitely help them in getting leads on potential sales and recruits. The incubator has already given office space to 32 startups who were looking for cheap satellite offices.
The idea is similar to YCombinator and TechStars with Salesforce asking for startups to enrich the Salesforce CRM eco-system instead of a percentage of stocks that YCombinator and TechStars demand. This will also enable Salesforce to with stand competition from the likes of Coghead, which allows users to build there own custom CRM.
