Joyent has launched Slingshot, a Rails framework that allows application to work offline and online in sync. The framework will be made available to general public in late April 2007.
With the new framework ROR developers would become independent of the Web Browser and develop applications that work seamlessly in online or offline mode. The data would later be synched using a simple and transparent synchronization mechanism. Existing Rails applications can be easily ported to slingshot and in future Slingshot will allow file system accesso remote data as well.
This is clearly best of both worlds i.e. Developers could rapidly develop, deploy and update just like web apps and do things impossible with AJAX just like the desktop apps. The framework is simple and light weight and will be available for free to all those who wish to host their apps with Joyent.
A quick tour is here and some technical insights are here.
