The domain name social.com is now on sale at sedo. The sale listing will end on April 2, 2007. The domain is currently owned by Guided Tour Software. The company claims that the word social turns up in hundreds of millions of Google searches and hence would be an ideal domain for a service in the area of:
- Social Networking
- Social Media
- Social Dating
- Social Marketing
- Social Investing and the likes
Will the domain be a sure path to web 2.0 riches ? I dont think so. Before Friendster who could have thought that a social network could have such a “ster” in the name. Before Del.icio.us who could have thought that the a social bookmarking site could be named as such, same goes for Flickr. Not only this, these names have been cloned by literally hundreds of other services.
So clearly you don´t need a good name to be great. You need to be great to have a good name.
